Endodontic Retreatment

With proper care, teeth that have undergone endodontic treatment will last as long as other natural teeth. Yet, a tooth that has received treatment may fail to heal, or the pain may persist. Sometimes, the pain may occur months or years after treatment. If so, Endodontic Retreatment may be needed.

Improper healing can have several causes; however, the most important thing to keep in mind is that if a root canal fails, endodontic retreatment can resolve the issue, alleviate any pain, and still save your natural tooth. At Rancho Endodontics, we have provided endodontic retreatment near you for three decades using the latest techniques to ensure success and patient comfort.

How long does a retreatment of a root canal take?

At Rancho Endodontics, most retreatments are completed in one to two visits, depending on the tooth and the complexity of the case. Because our specialists use high-powered microscopes and advanced 3D imaging, we can identify and treat issues with greater precision. This means fewer visits, less time in the chair, and a smoother overall experience.

How common are failed root canals?

Root canals are highly successful procedures, but sometimes a tooth doesn’t heal as expected, or new problems, such as hidden canals or fresh decay, develop over time. These situations are not unusual, and they don’t mean the original treatment was performed poorly. Our team at Rancho Endodontics has decades of combined experience addressing these exact challenges, and we’ve successfully retreated countless teeth that patients thought were beyond saving.

Is retreatment better than extraction?

Whenever possible, saving your natural tooth is the healthiest option. Natural teeth offer superior function, appearance, and bite stability compared to replacements. At Rancho Endodontics, retreatment is often the best path to preserving your tooth and protecting your overall oral health. Extraction is considered only after every effort has been made to keep your tooth, and our specialists excel at giving teeth a second chance.

Can a dentist retreat a failed root canal?

While some general dentists may attempt retreatment, endodontists are uniquely trained for this type of procedure. Our doctors have advanced specialty training and utilize the latest technologies to locate and treat even the smallest canals or hidden infections. This level of precision and expertise greatly improves the success of endodontic treatment near you.

Does insurance cover retreatment?

Many dental insurance plans include benefits for retreatment, though the details vary. Rancho Endodontics has a knowledgeable team dedicated to helping patients navigate insurance. We’ll review your benefits, answer your questions, and provide clear options so you can feel confident about moving forward with treatment.

Patient Review by John B

I have had a few root canals done before but I have never had a better experience then I had with Dr Roe. She is the ultimate professional and was warm and courteous thoughout the entire procedure. She kept me informed as to her progress and I felt part of what was going on. I would recommend her and her staff to any and everyone. An outstanding office!

Patient Review by Julie V

I am very happy with my experience at Rancho Endodontics. I needed two root canal re-treatments six months ago (from one old and one VERY old root canal), and my most recent appointment was to evaluate healing from those two procedures. The office staff was friendly and helpful, and, of course, I can't give any higher praise to the endodontist who saved my two teeth--Dr. Pettersen. The office is very well-run, and they make you feel like a valued customer.
